
The Tacoma is the default midsize overland truck for good reasons: it holds value, it is mechanically conservative, and its aftermarket is second only to the Wrangler’s. It is also an independent-front-suspension truck with leaf springs out back, which sets hard limits on how it can be modified. You cannot lift a Tacoma the way you lift a Jeep, and most disappointment with Tacoma builds comes from not understanding that before spending money.
What the platform gives you stock
Second gen (2005-2015), third gen (2016-2023) and fourth gen (2024 onward) share the same architecture: a double-wishbone independent front end on coilovers, and a solid rear axle on leaf springs. The fourth gen moved to a turbocharged four-cylinder with a hybrid option, but the suspension layout is unchanged in principle.
The trim that matters most is TRD Off-Road, which adds an electronic rear locking differential plus the traction electronics – and the locker is the hardest thing to add later. If you are shopping used and off-road is the point, buy the locker. TRD Pro upgrades the dampers (Fox on recent generations) and adds badging, but nothing the aftermarket cannot sell you. On the fourth gen, Trailhunter is the notable addition: Old Man Emu suspension and a factory-integrated overland package, which is new territory for a mainstream truck.
What no trim gives you is much payload. Midsize ratings are lower than people assume and drop as options go up. Check the door jamb before planning a camper or a bed build.
The first mods that make sense here
On an IFS truck, understand what “lift” means before buying one. Cranking a factory coilover’s preload adds no suspension travel – it trades droop for ride height and leaves a harsher, less capable front end. A real front lift means a coilover built for the extra height (Bilstein, Icon, King, Fox and Old Man Emu all play here) plus upper control arms to restore ball joint travel and correct alignment.
The rear is the opposite problem. Factory leaf packs are soft and tuned for an empty bed. A pack or add-a-leaf sized for how you actually load the truck rides better loaded and stops the squat. That single change does more for a touring Tacoma than any amount of front lift.
After that the order is boring and correct: all-terrain tires in a size you can fit without surgery, rock sliders, skid plates, then a front bumper and winch only if you need them. Steel plus a winch is 150-200 lb hung off the nose, so buy front springs rated for that weight or buy them twice. First five mods for a new 4×4 has the general version.
Known gotchas
The cab mount. On the third gen especially, fitting 33-inch tires usually means trimming the cab mount – the “cab mount chop” that appears in every fitment thread. It is common and well understood, but it is body work, and not what people expect when they buy tires. The sizing logic in what size tires fit my Jeep applies here too.
Frame corrosion on older trucks. Toyota ran frame inspection and replacement programs on earlier Tacomas, and rust is what ends second-gen trucks in salt states. Get underneath a used one before spending on parts for it.
CV angles. Past roughly 3 inches of front lift, the constant-velocity axles run at angles they were not designed for and life expectancy drops. More than that means a long-travel kit, not a taller spring.
Gearing and the V6. The third gen’s 3.5-liter makes its power high in the rev range and feels flat below it, and bigger tires make that worse. On 33s most people cope; on 35s, plan to regear.
Watch out: a slight driver-side lean from the factory leaf packs is common and widely reported. It is usually a spring rate quirk rather than a fault, and it is often fixed as a side effect of replacing the rear pack – not by adding a spacer up front.
Lift height and tire size: a starting point
A rough starting point only. Fitment varies by generation, cab and bed configuration, wheel offset and how much trimming you accept. Confirm for your exact year and trim before ordering.

Is a leveling kit enough, or do I need a full lift?
If you only want to close the front wheel gap and fit a slightly larger tire, a leveling kit does that cheaply. If you want the truck to ride better loaded or handle rough dirt at speed, a spacer does the opposite – you need replacement coilovers and a rear pack sized for your load.
Do I need upper control arms with a 2.5 inch lift?
Usually yes. Beyond about 2 inches the factory arm limits ball joint travel and alignment specs get hard to reach, particularly caster. Some kits claim not to require them; the honest version is that they work, but the front end runs closer to its limits.
What is the biggest tire I can fit without cutting anything?
Broadly 32 inches on a modest lift with sensible offset. At 33s on a third gen, expect trimming at the cab mount and possibly the fender liner. Offset changes this as much as lift height does, so decide wheels and tires together.
