All-terrain is the least useful category name in the tire industry. It covers everything from a quiet highway tire with slightly chunkier shoulder blocks to something one void ratio short of a mud terrain. Two tires both labelled A/T can differ by two load ranges, a lot of weight and a large slice of tread life.
So the question is not “which all-terrain is best”, it is “which compromise am I buying”. Below, the picks organised by what you are actually asking the tire to do, plus the four specs that decide almost everything.
The short answer
- Best all-round default: BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 (or its successor, the KO3) and the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W. Both are severe-snow rated, both are widely available in the odd sizes 4x4s need.
- Best for real winters: anything carrying the 3PMSF mountain-snowflake symbol, with the Wildpeak A/T3W and General Grabber ATX being the value plays.
- Best if you mostly drive on pavement: Michelin LTX A/T2 or a Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S. Quieter, longer-wearing, less capable in mud. That is the correct trade for most people.

The four specs that decide everything
Load range
Passenger-metric tires are marked SL (standard load) or XL (extra load). Light-truck tires use letters: C, D and E, which correspond to progressively stiffer construction and higher maximum pressure. Load range E is not “better” — it is a stiffer carcass designed to carry more weight, and if you bolt it to a light half-ton that never carries anything, you get a harsh ride and extra unsprung weight in exchange for load capacity you will never use.
Match the load range to the vehicle’s actual loaded weight, not to how tough you want the tire to sound. A Wrangler on 35s with no bumper and no rack is fine on load range C. A three-quarter-ton pickup towing a trailer is not.
The 3PMSF symbol
The three-peak mountain snowflake means the tire passed a standardised test for traction on medium-packed snow. It is meaningfully stricter than the old M+S marking, which is essentially a tread-pattern declaration and means very little.
Two caveats that get lost. First, the 3PMSF test measures acceleration traction on snow — it does not test ice, and it does not test braking. A 3PMSF all-terrain is still not a winter tire. Second, the rating can vary by size within the same model line, so confirm the specific size you are buying rather than assuming the whole range carries it.
Weight
Tires are unsprung, rotating mass, which means every pound costs you more than a pound sitting in the bed. Heavier tires blunt acceleration, lengthen braking distances, hurt fuel economy and work your brakes harder. A load range E 35 in all-terrain is a serious lump of rubber, and it is a big part of why people find themselves needing to regear after a tire upgrade. If two tires meet your requirement and one is noticeably lighter, take the lighter one.
Tread life and the warranty
UTQG treadwear numbers are only required on passenger tires, are self-reported, and are not comparable across brands. The mileage warranty is a slightly better signal because the manufacturer is putting money behind it, but it is still full of conditions about rotation records and alignment. Broadly: the more open the tread and the softer the compound, the better it grips loose surfaces and the sooner it wears out. There is no way around that trade.
Watch out: aggressive all-terrains wear unevenly and get loud if you neglect rotation. Rotate on schedule, keep the alignment right, and check pressures monthly. Skipping this is the single most common reason people conclude a tire model is bad when the tire was fine.
Best all-round: BFGoodrich KO2 / KO3 and Falken Wildpeak A/T3W
The KO2 has been the default recommendation for over a decade for a good reason: it is available in almost every size a 4×4 owner might want, it is 3PMSF rated, its sidewall construction has a strong reputation for resisting cuts, and it wears predictably. Its successor, the KO3, continues the same brief. The KO2 is not the quietest, not the cheapest, and not the best in deep mud. It is the tire that is competent at everything and disqualified from nothing.
The Falken Wildpeak A/T3W is the tire that broke BFGoodrich’s hold on that recommendation. Severe-snow rated, aggressive shoulder blocks that keep working when you air down, and consistently priced below the premium names. The newer A/T4W steps the tread pattern up further for people who want more off-road bite. Falken’s positioning is straightforward — most of the capability, less of the money.
If you have no strong opinion and you want a tire that will not embarrass you on a Tacoma, a Wrangler or a Bronco, pick one of these two and stop reading.
Best for snow: 3PMSF, and be realistic about ice
For people who see real winter, the shortlist is the 3PMSF all-terrains: Wildpeak A/T3W, KO2/KO3, Toyo Open Country A/T III, General Grabber ATX and the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S or XLT. Siping matters here — the small slits cut into the tread blocks create biting edges and let the block flex, and heavily siped all-terrains behave noticeably better on packed snow.
What none of them do is match a dedicated winter tire on ice. If your winter involves regular ice or steep icy driveways, a second set of winter tires on cheap steel wheels beats a more aggressive all-terrain. Four-wheel drive helps you go; it does nothing for stopping or turning.
Best highway-biased: Michelin LTX A/T2 and Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S
If you honestly assess your driving and it is ninety-five percent pavement with occasional gravel, the aggressive tire is the wrong tire. The Michelin LTX A/T2 is a long-standing highway-leaning all-terrain: quiet, comfortable, long-wearing, with modest off-road ability. It does not carry the 3PMSF symbol, so it is not the winter choice.
The Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S sits in a similar place but is severe-snow rated, which makes it a good compromise for a commuter 4×4 in a snowy region. Cooper’s AT3 family is worth understanding before you order: the 4S targets SUVs and light-duty use, the XLT is the heavier LT-metric version for trucks, and they are not the same tire.
The thing nobody warns you about with the aggressive option is how noise changes over the tire’s life. All-terrains generally get louder as they wear, and faster if the rotation schedule slips. A highway-biased tire does not have that failure mode.
Best for heavy and loaded rigs
A truck carrying a camper, a Jeep wearing a steel front bumper and a full-size spare, or anything towing regularly needs carcass strength, not just tread pattern. Load range E in an LT size, from Toyo Open Country A/T III, Falken Wildpeak A/T3W or the Cooper AT3 XLT, is the standard answer. Toyo’s A/T III in particular has a reputation for holding up under weight while staying reasonably civil on road.
Two things to get right. Set your cold pressures for the actual load, not the maximum stamped on the sidewall — that number is a maximum, not a recommendation, and running an unloaded truck at it gives you a crowned contact patch and a nasty ride. And carry a way to reinflate, because airing down is most of the benefit of a good all-terrain and you need a compressor that can actually refill a 35 to get back on the road afterwards.
Best budget without gambling
The Cooper Discoverer AT3 and General Grabber ATX are the two that consistently come in under the premium names while still being made by large, established manufacturers — Cooper is now part of Goodyear, and the Grabber ATX comes out of Continental. Both are 3PMSF in most sizes. Neither is a compromise you have to apologise for.
Below that price point you get into house brands and unfamiliar imports. Some are fine. The risk is not usually catastrophic failure; it is inconsistent wear, worse wet braking and sidewalls that give up early on sharp rock. Tires are the only part of the vehicle touching the road, and the wrong place to save the last two hundred dollars.
The hybrid: Nitto Ridge Grappler
The Ridge Grappler sits between all-terrain and mud terrain — big shoulder lugs, aggressive sidewall, but a tighter centre tread than a true mud tire so it stays reasonably quiet at highway speed. It is genuinely good at what it does, and it is the right answer if you regularly hit terrain an all-terrain struggles with but cannot live with a mud tire daily.
Be clear-eyed about the cost. It is heavy, it is not 3PMSF rated, it wears faster than a conservative all-terrain and it costs more. Availability, load range options and snow ratings vary by size and by model year, and prices move constantly. Confirm the exact size code you intend to buy rather than the model line.
Watch out: going up a tire size is not just a tire purchase. Bigger tires change your effective gearing, your speedometer reading and often your clearance requirements. Check what actually fits your vehicle before you order, and if you are jumping two sizes, expect the suspension and gearing conversations to follow.
Buying notes
Check the DOT date code on the sidewall — the last four digits are the week and year of manufacture. Tires age whether or not they are used, and a set that has sat in a warehouse for three years is not a bargain. How much fuel economy will I lose?

No. The symbol means the tire passed a snow acceleration test. A severe-snow all-terrain is a very good year-round compromise, not a replacement for winter rubber where winters are harsh.
How long do all-terrain tires last?
