The First Five Mods for a New 4×4

Recovery gear and a compressor before anything cosmetic, tires before lift, sliders before bumpers. The sensible order to modify a new 4×4, and why.

You just bought a 4×4 and the internet has already told you it needs a 3-inch lift, 35s, a light bar and a bumper that weighs as much as a motorcycle. Most of that advice comes from people who bought their parts in the wrong order and are now describing the route they took as though it were a plan.

Here is the order we would actually spend the money in. It is boring at the start and gets more fun later, which is the opposite of how most builds go, and that is the point. Everything below either gets you home, stops something expensive being destroyed, or unlocks capability you can use next weekend.

The short answer

  • Drive it stock for a season first. You cannot fix problems you have not had yet.
  • Recovery gear comes first, because being stuck is the failure mode that ends trips.
  • A compressor and a way to air down is the highest capability-per-dollar mod there is.
  • Tires before lift. Tires change how the truck behaves; lift mostly changes what fits.
  • Sliders before bumpers. Rocker panels get hit far more often than bumpers do.
  • Suspension only as much as your tires actually require, and lighting last.

Mod zero: drive it stock for a season

Every mod is an answer to a question. If you have not been out enough to have questions, you are buying answers at random.

A season of real use tells you things no forum can. Whether you actually rock crawl or mostly drive fire roads. Whether you sleep in the truck or in a hotel. Whether the factory approach angle is a problem or a rumour. Modern 4x4s leave the factory genuinely capable — a stock Wrangler, Bronco, 4Runner, Tacoma or Gladiator with a locker and low range will go well past where most owners are willing to take it.

So go out repeatedly, go with people who have been doing it longer, and write down every moment the truck actually limited you. That list is your build plan, and it will look nothing like the one you would have written on day one. It is also the cheapest way to dodge the trap in what an overland build actually costs: buying the wrong thing, then buying the right thing.

1. Recovery gear, before anything that makes it look different

The first purchase is the one that gets you unstuck, because being stuck is the failure that ends trips, ruins other people’s weekends and occasionally costs a tow bill with a comma in it.

A sane starter kit is a rated soft shackle or two, a kinetic recovery rope sized to your vehicle’s weight, a tree saver strap, recovery boards, a folding shovel, gloves and a rated recovery point actually bolted to the frame. That last item is where people fail: a strap on a tie-down hook is how equipment becomes a projectile. Check what recovery points your truck has from the factory, because it varies by model and trim.

Recovery boards deserve their own note. They are the least glamorous thing here and the most likely to get you moving in sand, mud and snow, alone, in about four minutes. Maxtrax and ARB Tred are the reference designs; cheaper copies exist and some are fine, but the failure mode of a cheap board is folding or melting under a spinning tire. Expect roughly $250 to $600 for a genuinely useful set, depending on rope rating and boards. Prices move, so treat that as a shape, not a quote. A winch is not on this list — heavier, pricier, needs a bumper to mount to, and far less useful than boards and a friend for the first couple of years.

2. A compressor, a gauge and a way to air down

This is the highest capability-per-dollar modification available to a 4×4, and almost nobody buys it first.

Dropping tire pressure lengthens the contact patch, lets the tread conform to rock and float on sand, and softens the ride enough that the vehicle stops being beaten to pieces. The difference between a stock truck at road pressure and the same truck aired down is larger than the difference between that truck and a lifted one on the same tires. It is close to free traction.

The catch is that airing down only makes sense if you can air back up, so the compressor is the actual purchase. A small portable unit runs roughly $100 to $200 and fills four tires slowly. A twin-motor unit — ARB’s twin is the usual reference — runs roughly $300 to $600 and does it in a fraction of the time. Add a deflator and an accurate gauge for well under $100. Try this before buying anything: air down on your next trail day and drive the same section twice. If that does not convince you to buy a compressor, nothing on this page will.

3. Tires — and yes, tires before lift

Tires are the only modification that changes everything the vehicle does: traction, braking, steering feel, road noise, fuel economy, ride quality, puncture resistance. Suspension changes ride height and travel. Tires change the truck.

If the factory set still has life in it, run it out. When it is time, the decision is mostly compound and tread pattern, not size. A good all-terrain such as the BFGoodrich KO2 or Falken Wildpeak AT3W handles almost everything most owners do, stays civil on the highway and works in rain and snow. A mud-terrain is louder, wears faster, is worse in the wet and genuinely better in deep mud and on sharp rock — a real trade, not a lifestyle choice. On size: go up one step, not three. A modest increase usually fits with minor trimming or none, keeps gearing usable, keeps the speedometer close and needs no lift. Fitment varies enormously by year, trim, wheel offset and suspension, so confirm what clears on your exact vehicle rather than trusting a photo — what size tires fit my Jeep shows the method, and the wheels and tires hub covers offset and load range.

Budget roughly $1,200 to $2,000 for a set of five capable all-terrains mounted and balanced, more for larger sizes and heavier load ranges. Buy five, not four, so the spare matches. And accept the running costs now: aggressive tires cost fuel economy, wear faster, and past a certain diameter push you toward re-gearing, a four-figure job on its own.

4. Rock sliders, before bumpers

Look at where 4x4s actually get damaged. Not the front bumper. The rocker panel, the strip of sheet metal below the doors, which is structural on many vehicles, expensive to repair, and sits at exactly the height of every rock you will ever misjudge.

Rock sliders are frame-mounted steel that takes the hit instead. They are the cheapest damage insurance on the vehicle, and unlike a bumper they add almost no weight ahead of the front axle, so they do not upset the suspension you have not bought yet. They also double as a step and a jack point. Roughly $700 to $1,600 installed. Bumpers come much later, if at all: a steel front bumper adds serious weight over the front axle, changes how the suspension behaves, and mostly exists to carry a winch you may not need yet. The bumpers and armor hub covers when it is genuinely worth it.

5. Suspension, and only as much as your tires require

Fifth. Not first. By now you know what the truck does, you have the tires you want, and you know exactly what is rubbing.

The honest reason most people lift is tire clearance, and the honest amount required is smaller than what gets bought. A leveling kit or a modest 2-inch kit clears a lot and stays inside geometry the factory already accommodates. Past roughly 2.5 inches you need correction parts — adjustable control arms, a corrected track bar, extended brake lines, longer bump stops, sometimes a driveshaft — and the price stops being the kit and starts being the list. Where the money genuinely goes is damping. A quality kit from Old Man Emu, Bilstein, Icon or Fox rides better than stock on and off road, because the shocks are valved for the spring rate rather than chosen to hit a price. A cheap lift raises the truck and makes it worse to drive. That is a real outcome, not snobbery. Ranges are broad on purpose and move constantly. Treat them as planning shapes, not quotes.

What comes after, and why later is correct

Lighting is genuinely useful and genuinely overbought. Factory headlights on a modern truck are decent; the case for auxiliary light is night driving on unlit trail, and the useful answer is usually a pair of well-aimed pods or ditch lights from a brand that publishes real beam data, such as Baja Designs or Rigid. A 50-inch bar on the roof lights up your own hood, blinds oncoming traffic and, in many places, needs a cover to be road legal at all. Storage, drawers, a fridge and a sleeping setup come after that, and only once you know how you camp. A roof top tent is a wonderful thing that also raises your centre of gravity and costs fuel economy. Plenty of people end up happier with a platform in the back.

What we would skip

Wheel spacers as a fitment fix, because they move load outboard and shorten bearing life. Lift blocks on a front axle. Steering stabilisers used to hide a worn component rather than replace it. Snorkels bought for anything other than real water crossings or genuine dust. And the deep, seductive category of parts that change how the truck looks and nothing else — buy those last, cheerfully, once it actually works.

The site is called Just One More Mod for a reason. There is no version of this where you stop. But there is a version where each thing you buy makes the next trip better, and it starts with a rope and a compressor rather than a light bar.

Is it really worth waiting a season before modifying anything?

For most people, yes. The cost of waiting is a few trips in a stock truck, which is a fine experience. The cost of not waiting is a lift for clearance you never needed and tires louder than you can live with. If you have driven 4x4s for years, skip ahead — this is for first-time owners.

Can I fit bigger tires without a lift?

Usually one size up, sometimes with minor trimming of a liner or an adjustment to the bump stops. It depends on your vehicle, wheel offset and trim, so check fitment for your exact year and trim before ordering. Rubbing often only appears at full articulation, not in the driveway.

What if I only ever drive gravel roads and campsites?

Then stop after step two. All-terrain tires when the factory set wears out, a compressor and a recovery kit will handle forest roads, snowy access roads and beach approaches. Spending more buys capability you will not use and a worse daily driver.

Do I need a winch?

Only if you travel alone where being stuck is serious, or you wheel hard enough to self-recover regularly. Otherwise boards, a kinetic rope and a second vehicle solve almost everything for a fraction of the cost. Warn and a few others make excellent winches for when it is genuinely time.

How much should I budget overall?

Very broadly, a truck that is comfortable on weekend trips lands in the low thousands of dollars of modification spend, and climbs fast once sleeping, power and storage enter the picture. The costs that ambush people are the running ones: tires, fuel, alignments and re-gearing.
