
The Wrangler is the easiest 4×4 in the world to modify and one of the easiest to modify badly. Solid axles at both ends, a separate frame and a parts catalogue deeper than anything else on the road mean almost nothing is off the table. The costs are just as consistent: a short wheelbase, a tall center of gravity, steering geometry that gets worse the higher you lift it, and a drivetrain sized for the tires it came with rather than the ones you are already shopping for.
What the platform gives you stock
Every Wrangler from the TJ (1997-2006) onward runs coil springs and links over solid axles at both ends. That is why the aftermarket is what it is – lifting a coil-sprung solid axle is mostly taller springs and longer shocks, which is why entry-level kits are cheap and why so many people buy a bad one.
The trim that changes the math is the Rubicon: heavier axles (Dana 44, or the M210 front and M220 rear on the JL), front and rear locking differentials, a 4:1 low range, an electronic front sway bar disconnect and taller tires. A JL Rubicon leaves the dealer on 33s with lockers and 4.10 gears – a build people used to spend $6,000 reaching.
Non-Rubicon trims hold the weak links. The front axle is usually a Dana 30; the rear varies by generation and body style, and a Dana 35 under a two-door is worth looking up before you buy tires. Jeep also sells factory big-tire packages – the JL Xtreme Recon adds 35s, a small lift and 4.56 gears.
The first mods that make sense here
Tires, then protection, then suspension – and you can often stop after two. A Rubicon on 33s needs no lift to run a better all-terrain tire, and most non-Rubicons take one size up on stock suspension. Second is rock sliders. A short wheelbase makes the rocker panel the pivot point on almost every obstacle, and factory side steps are decoration. They are cheap next to a bent rocker, and the one piece of armor nearly every owner is glad they bought.

Known gotchas
Death wobble. Solid front axles with a track bar are prone to it, and a lift makes a marginal front end fail sooner. It is worn or loose joints, not a design defect – what is death wobble covers the diagnosis order.
TJ slip-yoke transfer cases. Lift a TJ much past 3 inches and the rear driveshaft angle becomes a vibration you cannot tune out. The fix is a slip yoke eliminator and a CV driveshaft, and it belongs in the budget from the start. JK and JL owners are spared this one.
Gearing. Some non-Rubicon JKs left the factory with 3.21 axle ratios. Put 35s on that and the automatic hunts constantly – see do I need to regear after bigger tires.
Steering geometry above 3.5 inches. Past that, track bar and drag link angles need correction brackets, adjustable arms and often a long-arm kit. That is where costs jump.
Watch out: a steel front bumper and a winch can add well over 150 lb ahead of the front axle. Buy springs before the bumper and the Jeep sits level for about a month. Buy springs rated for the weight the build will end at.
Lift height and tire size: a starting point
A rough map, not a fitment guide. Clearance depends on year, trim, wheel backspacing, flare style and how much trimming you tolerate. Confirm against your exact year and trim.

Is a Rubicon worth the premium if I plan to modify it anyway?
Usually, if lockers and heavier axles were on your list – you get factory-engineered versions of the three most expensive upgrades with a warranty and no labor bill. Building a mild rig on 33s you never planned to lock? A Sport with good tires is cheaper.
Can I fit 35s without a lift?
Sometimes, with heavy trimming and the right backspacing, and it will rub at full stuff. Most people are happier with 2 to 2.5 inches of lift under 35s. A JL Rubicon is close enough already that a modest kit does it.
Do I have to regear for 35s?
It depends entirely on your factory ratio. A 4.10-geared Rubicon on 35s is livable; a 3.21-geared JK is miserable, especially with an automatic and especially towing. Check the door jamb or build sheet first.
