
Suspension is the mod that unlocks every other mod and quietly re-prices all of them. Almost nobody wants ride height for its own sake; they want tire clearance, and lift is how you buy it. So the real decision is not “how many inches” but “how much factory geometry am I willing to disturb, and what does it cost to put back.” Get that right and a lift transforms the truck. Get it backwards and you spend two years chasing a vibration.
What actually matters
Spacers, coils and full kits are three different products
A spacer or leveling kit packs out what you already own. It is cheap, reversible, and mostly raises the front to cancel factory rake so a slightly larger tire clears; it adds no travel and no damping. New springs replace rate and height together, which is honest, but leaves factory shocks running at the wrong part of their stroke. A full kit brings springs, shocks, and the correction parts that keep the axles and driveline pointed where the engineers left them. Each step up costs roughly double the last, and each one fixes a problem the cheaper one created.
Geometry breaks before the parts do
Nothing snaps at three inches. What happens is subtler and worse: caster falls off on a solid front axle so the steering stops centering, control arm and track bar angles diverge so the axle shifts sideways under compression, brake lines and bump stops run out of length, and driveshaft angles steepen until the U-joints buzz at highway speed. On an independent front end, the CV axles take the angle and wear faster. This is the mechanism behind most of what gets blamed on “cheap parts”, including death wobble. Above roughly 2.5 inches on most rigs, correction stops being optional.
Shock valving is what you actually feel
Springs set height and carrying capacity; shocks decide whether the truck is pleasant. A spring that is too stiff for the vehicle’s weight gives you the harsh, skittering ride people mistakenly blame on big tires, and an underdamped shock gives you the float and the head-toss on washboard. Old Man Emu, Bilstein, Fox, Icon and King all sell one nominal height in several spring rates, because a stripped daily driver and a rig with a steel bumper and a winch are not the same vehicle. Buy for loaded weight, not brochure weight.
A matched kit beats parts-bin assembly
Mixing a spring from one brand with a shock from another is not automatically wrong, but you become the engineer: shock length, spring rate, bump stop height and droop limit all have to agree, or the shock becomes the travel limiter and dies. A kit sold as a system has had those arguments internally, and it gets you one warranty conversation instead of three suppliers pointing at each other.

Those bands are deliberately broad: pricing moves constantly and varies by platform, and fitment is year- and trim-specific. Confirm the part number against your build date.
The expensive mistake: buying height first and budgeting the consequences later. A 3.5 inch kit that clears 35s usually also wants a track bar, adjustable control arms, an alignment, longer brake lines, a driveshaft or carrier drop, and eventually new gears. Price the finished truck, then pick the height that fits the number. Most people happy with their suspension bought less lift than they wanted.

Do I need a lift to run bigger tires?
Often less than you think. Many platforms will take one size up on a leveling kit and some trimming. The limit is usually the inner fender and the frame at full steering lock, not the ride height.
Will a lift wreck my ride quality?
A well-matched kit can ride better than stock because it has more travel and better shocks. A spring-only lift on tired factory shocks almost always rides worse.
Does a lift void my warranty?
Not automatically, but a dealer can decline a claim on a component the modification plausibly caused. See the warranty question for how that argument usually goes.
Is a 6 inch lift ever the right answer?
For a dedicated trail rig on 37s or larger, yes. For a truck that commutes, it buys height you cannot use and a driveline you will keep paying for.
