
Armour is where enthusiasm and physics disagree most loudly. Every piece genuinely protects something, and every piece is heavy, expensive, and paid for again in ride quality, braking and fuel. The useful question is never “is this bumper good” — it is “what am I actually hitting, and what is the cheapest thing that stops it hurting.” For most people the honest answer is sliders first, skids second, and a steel front bumper much later than the internet suggests.
What actually matters
Each piece defends a different failure
Rock sliders protect the rocker panels and pinch seams — structural sheet metal that is ruinously expensive to repair and impossible to hide. They also give you a jack point. Skid plates cover the oil pan, transmission and transfer case, where one hit ends the trip and possibly the drivetrain. Differential guards take the impact on the pumpkin, the lowest point of a solid axle. A front bumper mainly buys approach angle, a recovery point and a winch mount. Rank those by what you can afford to break, not by what looks best in the driveway.
Weight is the real price
A full steel front bumper with a winch is a large mass hung ahead of the front axle, which is the worst place on the vehicle to add it. The nose sags, the factory springs sit lower and work harder, the shocks are underdamped for the load, and the front tires wear faster. Rear bumpers with tire carriers do the same at the other end. Aluminium and tube-style bumpers cut that weight at higher cost or less coverage. Whatever you choose, plan on revisiting the spring rate afterwards — this is why suspension houses sell “heavy load” variants.
Approach and departure angle, and where the metal sits
A high-clearance bumper is not the same as a heavy bumper. The win is geometric: cutting the corners back and up lets the truck climb a ledge before the bodywork touches. A full-width bumper with a big brush guard often makes the approach angle worse than stock while weighing three times as much. Skids do the reverse — they trade a little clearance for the ability to slide over what you would otherwise catch.
Sensors, airbags and the electronics behind the fascia
Modern trucks put parking sensors, radar for adaptive cruise, cameras and pedestrian-detection hardware in the front fascia, and the airbag system takes crash input from sensors near the bumper beam. ARB, CBI and RCI sell platform-specific bumpers with sensor provisions for exactly this reason. A bumper that discards those mounts can leave you with permanent dash warnings, a disabled driver-assist system, or a crash structure that behaves differently than designed. Confirm compatibility for your year and trim; the same nameplate changes hardware mid-generation.

Prices move constantly and vary by platform and finish; treat those bands as shape, not quotes.
The expensive mistake: steel bumper first, everything else later. It is the most visible mod, so it gets bought first, and it protects the part of the truck you are least likely to hit off-road. Meanwhile the rockers — the thing that actually gets crushed on a mistimed line — are still bare, and the nose is now heavy enough that the suspension you already bought is wrong. Sliders and skids cost less combined and keep a bad day from becoming a bodyshop estimate.
Where to start
If the truck is new to you, spend nothing until you have driven the terrain you actually have. Then armour the underside and the sides, and revisit bumpers once you know whether you need a winch mount. Budget the suspension consequences at the same time.

Steel or aluminium?
Aluminium saves real weight at a real price premium. Steel is cheaper, repairable with a welder, and heavier. On a daily driver, weight is the argument that matters most.
Do I need new springs after fitting a bumper and winch?
Usually yes, if you want the ride height and damping back. Most suspension makers offer heavier front springs for this load; fitting armour to standard springs is what makes people say their lift “sagged”.
Will an aftermarket bumper set off airbag or sensor faults?
It can, if it relocates or omits factory sensor mounts. Platform-specific bumpers from established brands generally retain them. Verify against your year and trim before ordering.
Are bolt-on sliders good enough?
For body protection and light contact, generally yes. If you plan to put the vehicle’s full weight on them repeatedly, weld-on or frame-mounted designs are the safer bet.
