Rear spring choice is the most consequential suspension decision on this vehicle.
TRD Off-Road is the trim to look for – it brings the electronic rear locking differential and the traction electronics, and the locker is the expensive thing to add later. The Premium version adds KDSS, a hydraulically linked stabilizer bar system that lets the sway bars go soft off-road and stay firm on-road. It works, it is worth having, and it complicates every suspension install you will ever do. TRD Pro adds upgraded dampers; Limited trades off-road hardware for full-time four-wheel drive and a cross-linked damper setup that most builders replace.
The newer generation moves to Toyota’s shared truck platform with turbocharged and hybrid four-cylinder power, and on the top off-road trims replaces KDSS with an electronically disconnecting front stabilizer bar. Trailhunter, as on the Tacoma, arrives with Old Man Emu suspension and a factory overland package.
The first mods that make sense here
Weigh the vehicle first, or at least be honest about the load. Drawers, a fridge, a dual battery, a rear bumper with a tire carrier and a roof tent add up fast, and rear springs chosen for the empty vehicle will sit low forever. Buy rear springs rated for the load you actually carry – the better suspension makers publish load-rated options for exactly this reason.
Second, interior storage. The cargo area is the reason to own one, and a drawer system or simple platform is the mod that changes daily use most. It is also the mod nobody photographs.
Third, tires and a modest lift. Two to two and a half inches with new coilovers and upper control arms up front, matched rear coils, and 33-inch all-terrains is the classic configuration, and it is classic for a reason. Then sliders and skid plates. A winch and steel front bumper come last, and only if you travel alone – they are heavy, and here weight is the enemy.
Known gotchas
KDSS makes lifts fiddly. The system is hydraulically cross-linked, so lifting a KDSS truck without following the correct procedure to relieve and re-settle it can leave the vehicle sitting with a persistent lean. This is well documented and normal, not a defect – but it means KDSS-specific spring or spacer combinations and a shop that has done it before.
The fifth gen’s drivetrain is old. The 4.0-liter V6 and five-speed automatic are durable and unstressed, but not efficient, and they do not love big tires. On 33s most owners live with it; on 34s and up, regearing stops being optional.
Body mount trimming. Fitting the larger end of the tire range on a fifth gen commonly involves trimming the front body mount and fender liner. Plan for it rather than discovering it in the driveway.
CV angles. The same limit as every IFS vehicle – past about 3 inches of front lift you are working the front axles at angles they were not designed for.
Watch out: roof load limits are far lower than tent marketing implies. Manufacturer dynamic roof ratings on vehicles like this are typically well under 200 lb, and a rooftop tent plus two adults exceeds that at rest. Static and dynamic limits are different numbers – read your owner’s manual first.
