
Recovery gear is the one category here where buying the wrong thing can kill someone. A stuck vehicle is a lot of mass held by suction and friction, and the moment you apply force you are storing energy in a line, a shackle, and whatever those bolt to. Almost every serious recovery injury traces to two failures: a component never rated for the job, and people standing in the load path. Everything below is organised around avoiding both.
What actually matters
Recovery points are not tie-down points — this is the one that kills
The small loops and hooks on a factory bumper or frame are frequently transport tie-downs, meant to stop a vehicle sliding on a ship. They are rated for a fraction of what a recovery generates and are often bolted through sheet metal. Under kinetic load they tear out and become a projectile travelling at the speed of the recoiling line. People have been killed by exactly this. A real recovery point is rated for the purpose, mounted to structure, and named as such in the owner’s manual. If you cannot confirm a point is rated for recovery, do not pull on it. Never use a tow ball — the failure mode is a steel sphere leaving at head height.
Rated soft shackles and closed loops only
Every item in the chain must be rated, and the weakest sets the limit. Use rated bow shackles or soft shackles — never an open-throat hook, never a chain of unknown provenance. Attach so the line cannot slide off as the angle changes, and never to a control arm, steering knuckle or axle tube. Lay a heavy blanket or purpose-made damper over any line under tension, so a failure drops the ends instead of whipping them. Everyone not driving stands well outside the arc, further than instinct suggests.
Kinetic rope, tow strap, and winch do different jobs
A kinetic rope stretches, stores energy and releases it, letting a moving vehicle pull a badly stuck one out gently rather than shock-loading it. That elasticity is also what makes failures violent. A flat tow strap without stretch is for towing or a steady pull, not a running start. A winch is for when there is no second vehicle, no run-up, or the recovery must be slow and controlled; it needs an anchor, a tree saver, and often a snatch block. Warn, ARB and Smittybilt are the established winch names, Maxtrax and ARB Tred for boards. Rate everything to loaded weight.
The minimum viable kit, and the buddy
Most stucks are shallow. Traction boards, a shovel and the ability to air down solve more situations than a winch does, at a tenth of the price. Airing down widens the contact patch and calms the ride on washboard; the discipline is a way to air back up, which is where a compressor from ARB or Morrflate earns its money. Add gloves, a rated recovery point at each end, a kinetic rope, two soft shackles and a damper, and you have covered most trail days. Then the highest-value item of all, which is free: a second vehicle. It doubles your options and it is a ride home. Solo travel is not forbidden, but it makes a winch non-optional, along with telling someone your route and return time.

The expensive mistake: a $400 kinetic rope hooked to a $3 factory tie-down loop. The rope is fine; the anchor is not, and the rope’s elasticity is what turns that failure into a fatality rather than a bad afternoon. Budget rated recovery points at both ends before you buy anything that pulls, and clear the lane before tension goes on.

How do I tell a recovery point from a tie-down?
Check the owner’s manual and look at what it bolts to. Recovery points are rated, mount to structure, and are described as recovery or tow points. Thin stamped loops through sheet metal are almost always transport tie-downs. In doubt, fit rated aftermarket points.
Do I need a winch?
If you always travel with another vehicle, probably not for years. Alone, or in terrain with no run-up, it stops being a luxury. It is also heavy weight on the nose, which the suspension will notice.
Kinetic rope or snatch strap?
Kinetic ropes stretch more, handle easier and shed water. Straps still suit straight towing. Either way, rated shackles and a damper are not optional.
How far down should I air?
Enough to visibly bulge the sidewall, and no further than your rims and speed tolerate. Lower pressure raises unseating risk, so slow down and air up before pavement.
