
Interior and storage decides whether a trip is pleasant, and it is where builds quietly gain several hundred pounds without anyone noticing. Every drawer, fridge, battery and rack solves a real annoyance, and every one is mass carried permanently for convenience used occasionally. The good version of this category is ruthless: fix what actually ruins trips — loose cargo, wet floors, a cooler full of water — and refuse the rest.
What actually matters
Drawer systems buy access, not capacity
A drawer system does not increase how much you can carry; it usually decreases it, because the structure eats volume and adds weight. What it buys is access without unpacking, a flat load floor, and cargo that stays put — worth a lot on a two-week trip and close to nothing on a Saturday. Price the alternative first: two or three hard cases and a cargo net do most of the same job for a fraction of the money and mass, and they come out when you want the space back.
Loose cargo is a safety item, not a tidiness item
Anything not secured becomes a projectile in a rollover or a hard stop, and off-road that includes sideways loads nobody plans for. Tie-down points, cargo barriers and properly rated straps matter more than the box they hold down. This is also the argument against stacking gear high: mass above the belt line raises the centre of gravity exactly where stability is scarce. Heavy items go low, forward of the rear axle, strapped.
Liners and covers are the cheap wins
Moulded floor liners with raised edges and washable seat covers are unglamorous and probably the highest-value purchases in the category. They protect resale value, they let you get in soaked and muddy without caring, and they cost a fraction of anything else here. On a small budget, this is where it goes first.
Fridges and power are one system
A 12V compressor fridge from Dometic or ARB ends the daily ice run and stops food swimming, and it is genuinely transformative on longer trips. But it needs power that will not strand you: a second battery or a power station, charged by DC-DC from the alternator or by solar, which means wiring and somewhere to put it. Price the system, not the fridge. For weekends, a cooler and a bag of ice is still the right answer.
Roof load limits are lower than you think
Two numbers matter and people conflate them. Dynamic capacity is what the roof carries while moving, and on many 4x4s it is modest — often well under 200 lb including the rack itself. Then the other cost: roof weight is the worst weight for handling and fuel, and a loaded rack adds drag and noise permanently.

The expensive mistake: building the interior for the trip you imagine instead of the trips you take. Drawers, a dual battery, a fridge and a roof tent can add several hundred pounds before you pack anything, and that payload is spent whether you use it or not — it lengthens braking distance, eats into GVWR, and makes the suspension you already bought wrong. The cheapest, most reliable mod in this category is not bringing it. Do a few trips, write down what you actually opened, and build for that.

Are drawers worth it for weekend trips?
Usually not. For two nights, hard cases and a cargo net do the job with less weight and far less money. Drawers pay off when you live out of the vehicle for a week, repeatedly.
How much can my roof actually hold?
Check the owner’s manual for the dynamic rating and subtract the rack’s own weight. The number is often surprisingly low. Static capacity while parked is much higher.
Fridge or cooler?
Fridge if you travel multiple days and can support it electrically. Cooler for a weekend. A fridge with no power plan is a heavy box that flattens your starter battery.
Do I need a dual battery setup?
Only if you run loads with the engine off. A portable power station is often the cheaper, simpler starting point, and it comes out of the vehicle when you do not need it.
