Best Lift Kits for the Jeep Wrangler
Spacer, entry coil, matched mid-tier or long-arm: what each Jeep Wrangler lift tier actually includes, what it costs you in daily driving, and which one you need.
Almost nobody buys a Wrangler lift because the suspension wore out. You buy one because you want bigger tires and the tires you want will not fit. That is a perfectly good reason. It is also why so many Wranglers drive worse after the lift than before: the kit was chosen by inches, not by what came in the box.
The useful way to shop is by tier. Each step up buys a specific set of parts that fix a specific problem the previous tier created. Once you know what those parts do, the price jumps stop looking arbitrary.
The short answer
- Just want 33s and a level stance? A quality 1.5–2 in spacer or budget boost is genuinely fine on a stock-shock Wrangler that mostly sees pavement.
- Want 33s and better ride quality? An entry coil kit with matched shocks (Rough Country, Teraflex, Old Man Emu) is the sweet spot for most people.
- Running 35s and wheeling regularly? A 2.5–3.5 in matched kit with corrected control arms, an adjustable track bar and extended brake lines. This is where the money starts being well spent.
- 4 in and up, or a dedicated trail rig? Long-arm territory. Big money, big capability, real daily-driving compromises.
- Height is the least important number in the kit. What the shocks are and whether the geometry gets corrected matters far more.
What a lift kit actually changes
A coil-sprung Wrangler locates each solid axle with control arms and a track bar. When you raise the body away from the axle, every one of those links swings through an arc, and the geometry they were designed around quietly goes out of spec.
Three things move. Caster drops, because the fixed-length control arms pull the top of the axle rearward; low caster is why a cheaply lifted Jeep wanders on the highway and refuses to self-centre. The axle shifts sideways, because the track bar swings on an arc too. And pinion angle changes, which loads the driveshaft U-joints at an angle they were not designed for and puts a vibration in the driveline at speed.
Alongside that, the brake lines and ABS wiring are now short relative to the travel you added, the bump stops no longer stop the tire before it hits the fender, and the sway bar end links are too short. A good kit includes parts for all of that. A cheap kit includes springs.
Watch out: a badly set-up lift is a common contributor to death wobble. The lift does not cause it; the worn or mis-set steering and track bar components a lift exposes do. If your Jeep has any looseness in the steering now, fix that before you lift it.
Which Wrangler you have matters more than you think
These generations do not share parts or problems, and a lot of internet advice gets applied to the wrong one.
TJ (1997–2006) is short-wheelbase and short-armed, and gains a lot from a well-matched kit. The constraint is the rear driveshaft: TJs with the NP231 transfer case use a slip yoke, and past roughly 3–4 inches you need a slip-yoke eliminator and a CV driveshaft. Budget for that as part of the lift, not as a surprise afterwards.
JK (2007–2018) is the most heavily supported Wrangler ever built, so kits are plentiful and cheap. The two-door and four-door behave differently, and JKs are the generation most commonly over-lifted and under-corrected.
JL (2018 onward) starts from better factory geometry and a better ride, which raises the bar for what a lift has to achieve to be an improvement. It also brings electronics into it: sway bar disconnects on Rubicon trims, and on later years driver assistance sensors that a big height change can upset. The Gladiator shares much of the JL front end but has an entirely different rear, so JL rear parts are not Gladiator parts.
Fitment varies by year, trim and whether you have a Rubicon. Confirm the part number against your build sheet rather than “JL, 2 in”.
Tier 1: spacers and budget boosts (roughly 1–2.5 in)
A spacer sits on top of the factory coil and pushes the body up without changing the spring. Some kits use a taller replacement coil that behaves much like the factory one. Either way you are buying height and nothing else.
This gets a bad reputation it only half deserves. On a Wrangler that mostly commutes, gets a set of 33s and sees a fire road twice a year, a quality spacer kit does exactly what it says, and the factory spring rate is untouched so the ride is unchanged. Rough Country and Teraflex both sell versions in this space, typically in the region of $150–400.
The limits are real, though. You have added ride height without adding travel, so the factory shocks now sit closer to full extension at rest — they run out of droop earlier, and past roughly 2 inches without longer shocks they can top out and eventually fail. You have also lost caster and shifted the axle, with no part in the box to fix either.
Watch out: a spacer lift plus longer shocks and nothing else is the classic recipe for a Jeep that looks great and drives badly. Past about 2 inches, budget for a front adjustable track bar even if you skip everything else. It is the cheapest part that meaningfully improves how a lifted Wrangler tracks.
Tier 2: entry coil kits (roughly 2–2.5 in)
Here you get replacement coil springs designed for the new ride height plus shocks valved to go with them, and usually extended bump stops and longer sway bar links. Expect somewhere in the region of $400–900 for the parts, though pricing moves constantly and bundle contents vary.
This is the tier most Wrangler owners should buy, and the shocks are the reason. A shock is a damper matched to a spring rate; when the spring changes and the damper does not, the Jeep gets floaty over dips and harsh over sharp edges at the same time. A kit where both parts were designed together generally rides better than stock, not worse.
Old Man Emu (ARB) is the reference point here and is deliberately conservative — modest lift, sensible rates, aimed at a loaded touring rig rather than a show truck. Rough Country’s kits with N3 or Vertex shocks are the value play. Teraflex sits slightly above both with upgrade paths inside its own line.
At 2–2.5 inches you can generally run 33s comfortably and 35s with trimming, though that depends heavily on wheel backspacing. Work it out using a fitment guide first, because the offset decision is harder to undo than the tire choice.
Tier 3: mid-tier matched kits (roughly 2.5–3.5 in)
This is where you stop buying height and start buying geometry. A proper mid-tier kit adds:
- Corrected or adjustable control arms — restores caster so the steering self-centres and the Jeep tracks straight.
- An adjustable front track bar — recentres the axle, which also stops the steering wheel sitting crooked.
- Extended stainless brake lines and relocated ABS wiring — so nothing pulls tight at full droop.
- Properly sized bump stops — so the tire meets the stop, not the fender flare.
- Better shocks — high-pressure twin-tube or entry monotube, with reservoir options above.
Budget roughly $1,200–2,500 for parts here, more with remote-reservoir shocks. Teraflex, Metalcloak, Icon and Clayton all live in this space. Metalcloak leans on high-articulation joints and an aggressive travel philosophy; Icon leans on shock quality; Clayton tends toward heavier arm and bracket construction. None is objectively correct — they are different bets about where the money goes.
Above about 3.5 inches on a JK or JL, expect to need a driveshaft or at minimum a transfer case lower kit plus a rear track bar bracket, and that is also where front driveshaft angle on a two-door starts causing vibration.
Tier 4: long-arm territory (roughly 4 in and up)
A long-arm conversion moves the control arm mounts rearward on the frame, lengthening the arms so they swing through a flatter arc. The result is much better articulation, a far more stable ride at speed off-road, and less geometry change as the suspension cycles.
It is also a fabrication-adjacent job. Kits from Clayton and Metalcloak in this space typically run in the region of $2,500–5,000 for parts, before shocks from Fox, King or Bilstein, before install labour, and before the driveshafts, regearing and steering upgrades a 37 in tire demands anyway.
Long arms also drop the belly: you gain axle-to-frame clearance and lose clearance under the frame rails, which on a rocky trail is a genuine trade. If your driving is mostly dirt roads and moderate rock, a well-set-up 3 in mid-tier kit will get you further than a poorly justified 4.5 in long arm.

Prices above are broad and move with the market, and every brand runs different bundle contents. Treat them as the shape of the ladder, not a quote.
Shocks decide how it drives
If you only upgrade one thing beyond the springs, upgrade the shocks. Bilstein 5100s are the durable, unglamorous, well-priced answer for a mildly lifted daily Wrangler, and Fox 2.0 Performance Series is the common step up. Reservoir shocks — Fox 2.5, King 2.5, Icon 2.5, ARB’s BP-51, Teraflex Falcon — add oil volume and cooling, which matters on an hour of washboard and matters much less on the commute.
Adjustable shocks are only worth it if you will actually adjust them. Most people set them once and never touch the knob again, which is a lot of money for a fixed valving you could have bought outright.
The costs nobody puts on the product page
A lift is never the whole bill. Assume an alignment afterwards, which is not optional. Assume tires, because that was the point. Assume that past 33s you should be having the regear conversation. Assume some combination of driveshaft, track bar bracket and steering parts once you pass 3 inches. And assume labour, which for a mid-tier kit is frequently a meaningful fraction of the parts cost.
Two more things to check first. The warranty question — a lift does not void your whole warranty, but it gives a dealer a reasonable argument about driveline and suspension claims. And local height and lighting rules, which vary by state and province and change; check where you actually live rather than trusting a forum post.
How to choose without overthinking it
Work backwards from the tire. Decide the size, confirm it fits your specific Wrangler generation and trim, then buy the smallest, best-quality kit that clears it. Height for its own sake buys you a higher centre of gravity and a harder step in.

Will a 2 inch lift fit 35 inch tires on a Wrangler?
Sometimes, with trimming, and it depends as much on wheel backspacing as on lift height. A 2 in lift with an aggressive offset wheel and some flare trimming can clear 35s on a JK or JL, but you may still rub at full stuff or full lock. If you want 35s with no trimming, 2.5–3.5 in is the honest answer.
Do I need new control arms with a 2.5 inch lift?
Not always, but you do need the caster corrected somehow. Many 2.5 in kits use cast front lower arms or drop brackets to recover most of the lost caster. If your kit includes neither and the Jeep wanders after the install, adjustable front lower arms are the fix.
Is Rough Country actually any good?
Their reputation is largely built on their cheapest spacer kits, which do what cheap spacer kits do. Their mid-range coil kits with N3 or Vertex shocks are reasonable value and widely used. The complaint that holds up is that entry kits often omit the geometry parts, so people compare a bare Rough Country kit to a fully specified kit from a premium brand and conclude the brand is bad rather than the package being smaller.
Can I install a lift kit myself?
A spacer or entry coil kit is a long weekend with hand tools, a good jack, stands and a lot of penetrating oil, assuming you are not fighting rust. A mid-tier kit with control arms and brake lines is harder but still driveway-feasible. A long-arm conversion involves frame brackets and sometimes welding, and is a poor first project. Whoever does the work, the alignment goes to someone with a rack.
