Tire Rotation Patterns for 4x4s (Including the 5-Tire Spare)

Most stock 4x4s should run a non-directional rotation pattern, but if you carry a full-size matching spare, rotate it into a five-tire cycle or it never earns its keep.

The right tire rotation pattern depends on two things: whether your tires are directional or non-directional, and whether your front and rear tires are the same size. Get either wrong and a rotation can move a tire into a position where it wears worse than if you had left it alone.

On a 4WD Wrangler, Gladiator, Tacoma, or 4Runner there is a third variable most rotation guides skip: the spare. Carry a full-size tire that matches the other four in size, tread, and load range, and it is a drivetrain component, not a backup. Leave it out of the rotation and it ages while the other four wear down — so when you actually need it, it no longer matches, and a mismatched fifth tire is exactly what a 4WD system tolerates worst.

Which tire rotation pattern fits your tires

There are three patterns, and the tire itself tells you which one applies.

  • Non-directional (free rotation). No arrow on the sidewall, symmetric tread blocks. These can move to any corner: front to back, side to side, or diagonally. Most factory all-terrain tires on Wranglers, Gladiators, Tacomas, and 4Runners fall here. The standard pattern is a rearward cross — the front tires move straight back, and the rear tires cross to the opposite front corner.
  • Directional. V-shaped or angled lugs that shed mud and water in one rotational direction, marked with an arrow and the word “rotation” on the sidewall. These stay on the same side of the vehicle for life — front to back only, never crossed.   • Staggered fitment. Front and rear tires are different sizes, usually wider in back. These cannot move front to back at all, directional or not. If they are also non-directional, they can still swap side to side on the same axle.

Why 4WD systems punish a mismatched rotation more than 2WD does

In a 2WD car, uneven tire wear is a ride-quality and tread-life problem. In a 4WD truck with the transfer case engaged, it is a driveline problem too. The front and rear axles are locked to turn at related speeds. If one axle’s tires have a noticeably smaller rolling circumference than the other’s — from wear, a mismatched spare, or mixed tire brands — the drivetrain absorbs that speed difference every time you are in 4WD. On a part-time system that shows up as binding and shudder, also why part-time 4WD should not run on dry pavement at all. On a full-time system with a center differential, it is less dramatic but still wears a part that is expensive to replace.

This is the same rotational-speed math that governs axle gearing: size up tire diameter enough and you change the effective gear ratio the same way a circumference mismatch does on a smaller scale. The five-tire rotation: putting a matching spare to work

If your spare is a genuine match — same size, same tread pattern, same load range as the other four, not a takeoff from a different trim or a compact temporary spare — it belongs in the rotation, not sitting untouched under the bed or on a swing-out carrier. A tire that never rotates in also never wears, which sounds good until you need it: it will have noticeably deeper tread and a slightly larger circumference than the other four, the exact mismatch the previous section describes, introduced right when you are relying on 4WD to get out of whatever put you on the spare.

The five-tire pattern extends the same logic as the four-tire version: work the spare in at every interval so it ages at the same rate as the rest. For non-directional tires, a common sequence is front-left to rear-left, rear-left to the spare position, spare to rear-right, rear-right to front-right, and front-right to front-left — a star pattern that cycles all five through every position over five rotations. Directional tires cannot cross sides, so the spare only enters on whichever side it is mounted; some shops instead swap it between the two positions on its own side each interval, then move it forward the next one.

Load range matters as much as size. How to tell what your spare is actually eligible for

Check the full size code on the sidewall — something like 265/70R17 — on all five tires, not just the four that are mounted. Also check tread depth with a gauge, not by eye. A quarter or a Lincoln-head penny gives a rough legal-limit check — most states set 2/32″ as the bare minimum — but for rotation purposes you are comparing relative depth across all five tires, and that takes an actual gauge, not a coin. A spare several 32nds deeper than the road-going four is not a problem to fix today, but it is a reason to start working it into the rotation now.

Rotation intervals, and when to ignore the calendar

Every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, timed with an oil change, is the standard interval for a stock or lightly modified rig running matched tires. Two things move that number:

  1. Lifted trucks and aggressive alignment settings wear specific corners faster — outer shoulders from camber change, front tires generally faster than rear on a 4WD that spends most of its miles in two-wheel drive. Inspect visually every oil change if you are running more than a leveling kit.
  2. Heavy off-road use accelerates wear unevenly by terrain, not by mileage. A week of rock crawling can do more damage to a specific tread pattern than months of highway driving. Rotate based on what the tread looks like, not just the odometer.

Whatever the interval, torque the lug nuts to spec after every rotation and check them again after 50 to 100 miles. That is standard practice after any wheel comes off, but it is the step people skip because the truck “feels fine” on the drive home.

Which pattern to run

  • If you run stock or replacement non-directional all-terrains, same size all around, with a matching full-size spare: run the rearward cross and fold the spare into a five-tire star pattern every interval. This is the default for most Wranglers, Gladiators, Tacomas, and 4Runners.
  • If you have mounted aggressive directional mud-terrains: rotate front to back on the same side only. A matching spare stays on whichever side it is mounted; never cross it to the other side, or you will run that tread pattern backward on that corner.
  • If you are running a staggered fitment, intentionally or from mismatched takeoffs: rotate side to side within each axle only. Do not buy a full-size spare expecting it to fill in on both ends — it can only match one axle’s size, so pick the one you are more likely to need it on.
  • If your spare is a compact or a genuine mismatch: leave it out of the rotation. Treat it as get-home-only, rotate the road-going four on schedule, and budget for a real matching fifth tire before a trip where recovery matters.

Common questions

Can I put a full-size spare into a normal tire rotation?

Yes, as long as it is genuinely full-size — same size code, same tread pattern, and same load range as the other four. A takeoff spare from a different trim, a compact temporary spare, or anything with a different load range should not rotate in; it will wear or flex differently under load, defeating the point of matching wear rates across all five tires. Check the sidewall code before assuming it qualifies.

What happens if I mix directional and non-directional tires?

Traction and braking become uneven side to side, especially in mud, snow, or wet pavement, because one tire clears debris and water differently than its opposite number. It is not illegal and will not immediately damage anything, but it is a real handling inconsistency, not just a cosmetic one — replace in pairs at minimum, on the same axle, if you cannot do all four at once.

Does a staggered fitment need rotation at all?

Non-directional staggered tires can still rotate side to side within their own axle to even out wear from camber and road crown. Directional staggered tires, a combination some performance setups use, cannot rotate at all — each tire is locked to one position for its life, so watch tread depth closely and replace before it drops below the legal minimum.

How much tread-depth difference is too much for a 4WD system?

There is no single number that applies to every truck; full-time systems generally tolerate more mismatch than a locked part-time transfer case, and the exact tolerance varies by manufacturer. As a rule of thumb, keep all four road tires within a few 32nds of each other, and treat anything beyond that as a reason to rotate, replace, or stay out of 4WD on dry pavement. Check your owner’s manual for the specific figure.

Do I need to rotate a tire that already shows uneven wear?

Rotating will not undo wear that has already happened, but it stops that spot from getting worse, and buys time to fix whatever caused it — usually alignment, a worn ball joint, or consistent overloading on one corner. Rotate on schedule and address the cause at the same time, or the new position will just develop the same pattern again.
