Tires change how a 4×4 behaves more than any other single purchase, which is why they are also the most over-bought part on the truck. The decision is not really “which brand” — the major all-terrains are all competent. It is a chain of consequences: the size you pick sets the clearance you need, the weight you add, the effective gearing you lose, and the offset that decides whether any of it rubs. Work that chain backwards from how you actually drive and the shopping gets simple.

What actually matters

Reading the size, in both notations

Metric sizing reads 285/70R17: 285 mm section width, sidewall height 70 percent of that width, 17 inch wheel. Flotation sizing reads 33×12.50R17: roughly 33 inches tall, 12.5 wide, same wheel. Those two are near-neighbours; most metric sizes have a flotation twin. Section width is the widest point of the carcass, not the tread, so a “12.50” does not put 12.5 inches on the ground. And stated height is nominal, at a nominal pressure on a nominal wheel width — real tires in one size can differ by half an inch between brands, which is exactly the margin that decides whether you rub.

Backspacing and offset decide whether you rub

Offset is the distance from the wheel’s mounting face to its centreline; backspacing is from that face to the inner lip. Both answer one question: does the tire move inboard toward the suspension and frame, or outboard toward the fender. Going more negative on offset pushes the tire out, which usually cures inner rub at full lock and creates outer rub at the fender lip. It also increases scrub radius, which loads wheel bearings and steering harder and makes the truck tug at the wheel under braking. Poking tires out is a legitimate fix; it is not a free one.

Load range and pressure are one subject

Load range (C, D, E) describes carcass construction and the load the tire carries at its rated pressure. An E-rated tire on a half-ton that never carries anything is a common, avoidable mistake: stiffer ride, heavier tire, capacity you never use. A heavy build with armour, a drawer system and a roof tent genuinely needs the carcass. Either way, the door-jamb pressure was calculated for the factory tire; a different size and load range wants a different pressure, so re-establish it by chalk test or load tables rather than guessing.

3PMSF, M+S, and what the markings promise

M+S is a tread-pattern designation a manufacturer can self-apply. The three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) requires passing a standardised snow traction test, so it means more — but it tests packed-snow acceleration, not ice grip or braking, and it does not equal a dedicated winter tire. Well-known all-terrains carry it, including the BFGoodrich KO2 and Falken Wildpeak AT3W. In real winter country, prioritise that marking over tread aggression.

Unsprung weight is the bill nobody reads

Each size step adds rotating mass at the far end of the suspension, and it charges you four ways: longer stopping distances on unchanged factory brakes, slower acceleration and worse economy from taller effective gearing, more work for the shocks, and faster wear on bearings and ball joints. Hence re-gearing, and why the smallest tire that does the job is usually the right one.

The expensive mistake: buying the tire first and discovering the clearance bill afterwards. A size that “fits” at ride height can still hit the sway bar at full stuff and full lock, and the fix is rarely a trim — it is a lift, different wheels, or both, on top of tires you already paid for. Confirm fitment for your year and trim, on your actual wheel width and offset.

Where to start

If you have not committed to a size, settle that first; everything downstream follows from it. After that the only question is tread type — how much road noise and tread life you will trade for mud.

Do bigger tires hurt fuel economy?

Yes, twice over: more rotating weight and taller effective gearing, plus rolling resistance from an aggressive tread. Size matters more than brand.

Do I have to re-gear?

Not always. Small steps on a truck with short factory gears are often tolerable. Big steps, or an automatic hunting between gears on hills, are the signal to take it seriously.

Are aftermarket wheels necessary?

Only if you need the offset or a wider bead seat for the tire you chose. Factory wheels are often stronger than budget aftermarket ones, and reusing them is a good way to spend nothing.

Do mud-terrains work in snow?

They move through deep unpacked snow, but on ice and packed snow the big voids and stiff compound work against you. Look for 3PMSF, not tread aggression.
